Feed the Dog’s Top Songs of 2022

Oh hello! ANOTHER YEAR. Things of that nature.

It’s a Charli XCX album year, so you already know what it is. For the sake of logging my evolving process of putting together these lists, I’ll mention that as I relax a bit about this whole thing — which mostly entails researching music outside of my areas of preference less vigorously, trying to be less obsessive about hearing every single new release, and not getting mad when it takes me until February to publish — I’ve also given up my 1 2 songs per artist rule fairly entirely, which does mean Charli has seven appearances in the list below. Sorry not sorry.

And yes, my number one song of the year is a bonus track off the deluxe album. If you’re really interested, I can explain to you all about how while Crash is an exceptional album it’s also a statement from a seasoned genius in the midst of fulfilling the requirements of her label contract about the space she’s capable of filling in the mainstream pop ecosystem despite her deliberate choices to repeatedly press the boundaries of genre, and that Charli in turn constricted herself from including too many hyperpop-leaning tracks on the album proper, but included some true gems on the deluxe edition, namely my #1 and #18 songs of the year — but you don’t probably care to hear about all that.

As with last year, I’ve decided filling this post with individual soundcloud/youtube embeds isn’t just bad for your browser cache, it’s passe and we’ve moved beyond it in 2023.
